The manufacturers say these will sense a blockage in the dryer vent system to improve performance, but they are not calling these “safety features.”
Dryer vent cleaning has been and still is the number one way to prevent dryer fires and promote dryer efficiency. The features are a great idea and a step in the right direction; however, studies indicate that they are not consistent and should not be relied on to detect dryer vent blockages.
Consumer Reports tested these features by completely blocking the dryer vent and then operating the dryer. The results were inconsistent; sometimes it worked; sometimes there was no signal at all even when the dryer continued to run for over an hour.
These features are new and the bugs are not completely worked out. Consumer Reports and dryer manufacturers recommend professional dryer vent installation and annual dryer vent cleaning to promote maximum dryer performance and safety.
According to Consumer Reports, new clothes dryers with these sensors can cost up to $1,200. Steve Gors, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard, says it is not necessary to run out and purchase a new clothes dryer. Just order a complete dryer vent inspection and have dryer vents cleaned periodically.
The dryer vent system is actually the most important part of the clothes dryer. Very old dryers should work as efficiently as new dryers if the dryer vent system is properly installed and maintained. On the other hand, a brand new dryer, with a professionally installed dryer vent system, will not operate safely and efficiently if the dryer vent system is clogged with lint build-up.
All clothes dryers need dryer vent cleaning to be safe!
Keep the lint screen clean and don’t overload the dryer!
Have a complete dryer vent inspection done and be sure to clean dryer vents at least once a year!
Make sure your dryer vent system is made of rigid metal – Replace all dryer vent systems made of plastic, flexible foil or vinyl.
